End Grain Checkered Cutting Board - Walnut & Maple

Every board starts the same way: solid walnut and hard maple, glued up in a classic checkerboard pattern, built by hand in small batches right here in Calgary, Alberta.

End grain is the reason I build boards this way. Instead of a blade dragging across the wood fibers, it slips down between them — so the wood flexes around each cut and closes back up over time. That's what keeps the board easy on your knives and looking good, cut after cut. Mine has lived on my kitchen island for years and still shows no real signs of wear.

• Solid walnut and hard maple, joined with food-safe glue
• Finished with food-safe mineral oil and a beeswax finish for extra water resistance and shine
• Care: hand wash, stand to dry, and refresh with mineral oil (and a beeswax conditioner occasionally) every few weeks
• Ready for daily use — chopping, slicing, prepping, all of it

A note on the wood: this is solid wood, not a printed pattern, so you'll see natural variation in colour and grain from board to board — that's part of what makes it real wood. On the larger sizes, I typically use bigger blocks in the checkerboard to suit the larger surface. If you have a preference on colouring or block size, just mention it when you order and I'll do my best to accommodate.
